I am trying to move Adobe FrameMaker 7.1 from Solaris 8 to Solaris 10 11/06 and am having font problems that I believe are related to the X server. I am finding that the same problem also exists in Acrobat 7, and it is independent of whether I'm using CDE or JDS (I'm mostly using JDS). Fonts in bundled apps (like Terminal) look great.
These applications display fonts that look like they have been smoothed more than once maybe by the application and then the X server. The result is that there is very little black in each character and a whole bunch of grey pixels. It's like you're looking at an early, blurry, color CRT monitor, or like you're looking at a page of text that's been copied over and over on a copy machine. I have played in JDS with Preferences->Desktop Preferences->Fonts and have changed smoothing; these settings seem to affect the built in commands (like Terminal) but not FrameMaker. I have changed Frame's idea of screen resolution from default 72dpi to 75, 90 and 100 dpi, and have changed the JDS settings to match, again, no difference. The font problem exists both in the working document that Frame displays *and* the menus, startup screen, etc. It's pretty unusable. I'm using a Samsung SyncMaster 940T monitor that xdpyinfo says is 90x90dpi. I'm running on a Sun Blade 150 and an XVR-100 frame buffer (problem exists on the analog and DVI outputs). I don't know where else to look or what else to try at this point... any suggestions are welcome! This message posted from opensolaris.org
