Another important note which regards ratcheting and hence probably related to this bug. If in PBC the stability of the packing can be seriously undermined by continuous accumulation of permanent deformations, with rigid boundaries it seems that under the same conditions (say identical parameters and contact law), the problem does not occur or in other words a stable packing can be obtained even in the presence of ratcheting. Hence, we keep in mind that boundary conditions do affect this problem.
