Consider that strain (be it a ekk component or epsv) can be defined exactly 
from its derivative: de/dt=dL/(L.dt) (resp. dV(V.dt).
Then by integrating  between t0 and t, you get a logarithm. Hence epsv = 
log(V/V_0)
