Jan Stránský proposed the following answer: Hi Jessica, concerning "strainRate1=strainRate2" to avoid the volume change. Did you mean "strainRate1 = -strainRate2"? In this case I would say the volume (at least for small strains) would remain constant, while in the case of "strainRate1=strainRate2" it would definitely not.
