But I don't have the most recent version of DFNFlow. Does this script
(with the automatic dimension detection) work with the regular
FlowEngine for you?

What happens? What were you obtaining before? You can apply flux with:
flow.imposeFlux(flow.getCellCenter(flow.getCell(0, 0, 0)), -flowRate)
if this doesn't work I can try to put an MWE together for you
