Gary, First let's get some idea as to Which ones you mean, as people get these confused.
Are you talking about smilies? or about the emotes that you put in a room that say things? When you say they don't work? Can you elaborate? Do you mean you press the button and nothing happens? Or can you not see other peoples? You may have to reinstal messenger. Once you move things around, then the program is confused as to where to find the files it needs. Yes it's a computer and it's suppose to be smart, but hey, doesn't always happen, right?
