This is done with your Preferences. Open your YM and on your main Friends list window, choose the Messenger Menu, then choose Preferences, which will open a new window.
Then choose Alerts and Sounds and go through each option and choose what sound you would like. I have all my sounds off and have it set to show pop-ups since I HATE the rude buzzes that some people choose to send incessantly. LOL Anyhow, back to you. Put a check mark in the box for Enable alert sounds. Then highlight each "Alert me when:" option and put check marks in how you would like to be alerted on each choice.
