I have been having problems getting into the chat rooms too. I did finally get in when I used Lenny's suggestion about getting into a room with a few people in it first. I was then able to get into the room I wanted. I have used Y-Tunnel in the past when I chat, but I haven't been able to get it to work. It opens up, but as soon as Messenger opens, it shuts it down. That was the only thing that kept the bots away, so it is almost impossible to chat now.
