kathy kathy kathy i have windows xp, yep, it comes with a firewall, windows defender is just what lenny said it was, it aint a firewall .
Windows Defender is a free program that helps protect your computer against pop-ups, slow performance, and security threats caused by spyware and other unwanted software. It features Real-Time Protection, a monitoring system that recommends actions against spyware when it's detected and minimizes interruptions and helps you stay productive ----- Original Message ----- From: kathy kendall To: [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, September 05, 2007 9:49 PM Subject: Re: [Y!M] A warning In case you didn't know Lenny, I know you know more about computers than I do and thats ok. But you DON"T know more about mine than I do I'm sorry to say, I went to the site you sent as did my father neither of us had seen that site before in our lives, I'm sorry to inform you but we had a fire wall on this computer from Windows. I am positive the name was defender, my dad says he can't remember the name of it,but that sounds familiar. ----- Original Message ---- From: LNVTM1 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, September 5, 2007 3:12:19 PM Subject: RE: [Y!M] A warning In case you didn't know Windows Defender is not and has never been a firewall. The only Microsoft Firewall on Windows XP has been a very bad little firewall that partially protects against inbound threats but does nothing to alert you to programs on your computer that are connecting to the internet. A firewall should be two-way protection to stop incoming and outgoing threats. Here is Windows Defender home page: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx Sorry but according to my own personal experience beta testing the original program, when Microsoft first bought out Giant Companies to acquire their pretty good anti-spyware program, and after using it after it's public release and Microsoft's own website (link above): "Windows Defender is a free program that helps protect your computer against pop-ups, slow performance, and security threats caused by spyware and other unwanted software. It features Real-Time Protection, a monitoring system that recommends actions against spyware when it's detected and minimizes interruptions and helps you stay productive. Now with 2 free support incidents for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003" WD is a decent but not great anti-spyware program. It's free so it's better than nothing if one cannot afford one of the several very good paid programs but like I posted in an earlier post, AVG now has a FREE anti-spyware program which they acquired when they bought out Ewido Software and Ewido has a good reputation with it's anti-spyware but when I tried it a few years ago, it had a conflict with one of my other security programs so I wasn't able to use it very long but from all of the reviews that I've read in many forums, it is supposed to be a very good program and much better than Windows Defender. I'm going to try it, come December when my Webroots Spy Sweeper subscription ends. Spy Sweeper is a good program but it's a bit of a resource hog and I've had a few technical issues with it over the past two years. I would feel sorry for an average computer user who has Spy Sweeper since I've had to uninstall and reinstall it several times. I originally bought SS because it was a top-rated program but for some reason, it has become bloated over the past two years. It is not anti spyware i never thought it was. It's a firewall from Microsoft I got it in thier list of products, I'ts a free version I had. I just replied to your previous email about this before I saw your additional reply. Windows Defender is NOT a firewall. It is Microsoft's version of an Anti-Spyware. It works OK but isn't nearly as good as some of the paid Anti-Spyware programs out there. I Beta tested it when MS first bought the program from Giant and called it Microsoft Anti-Spyware in the beginning before changing the name to Windows Defender. I continued to use WD for about a year but found it wasn't nearly as good as other AS programs. Windows Live OneCare is not spyware so I'm not sure why you were using other programs to try to remove it. Windows Live OneCare is Microsofts version of a full security and preventive maintenance suite. While I don't recommend buying the service, I do send people to the FREE online scan and maintenance scan. I even use it once a week or so. It's not the best thing out there but it's OK as an additional layer of help. Here's the link to the free online scan http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm <http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm> but ONLY use the free "FULL SERVICE SCAN" button in the middle of the page, not the actual Live OneCare service that they try to sell you at the end. Just Say NO! to it. LOL Who puts out Spy Hunter and how did you find out about it? There are countless rogue programs there that purport to find and delete suspected spyware but these programs are frauds and make up the so-called spyware they find and then "delete" it but it never existed in the first place. I've never heard of Spy Hunter and it's not on this list of reputable Anti-Spyware programs... http://spywarewarrior.com/asw-features.htm <http://spywarewarrior.com/asw-features.htm> But it's not on this list of known rogue programs either... http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm <http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm> As you will more rogue programs compared to legitimate programs so be very careful about what you download. Here is one review that I found about Spy Hunter by Enigma Software which shows it to be a potential rogue program that finds false positives and then offers to clean them if you purchase the program and then of course, it cleans out the false positive that it supposedly found. http://www.adwarereport.com/mt/archives/000053.html <http://www.adwarereport.com/mt/archives/000053.html> NONE of the things you talked about so far are an actual Firewall. There are several FREE good firewalls that you can use on your computer. I am currently using Comodo Pro Firewall (FREE) but I've also used a couple of others in the past (ZoneAlarm and Sygate). I had windows Defende that was already on my computer when I purchased it, (Toshiba Satellite Notebook) and the third firewall is on my yahoo messenger. The anti virus i did have was not working properly in my opinion but i cannot prove that. I remembered it it wa Windows Live Onecare the free edition. i went to web site to get info on it cause even AVG couldn't get rid of it, I ran numerous Anti spyware programs, 3 in all i think, they all missed it. I finally bought my Spy Hunter and it took right off no problem. ----- Original Message ---- From: LNVTM1 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, September 5, 2007 9:56:44 AM Subject: RE: [Y!M] A warning In case you didn't know Which antivirus do you have? Do you have three firewalls? Which three and why are you running three? That would seem to slow down most computers to a crawl. If it's a brand new trojan, your AV may not have had the proper definitions installed. Do you do daily updates and scans? Do you have a good anti-spyware that runs actively in the background also? That is what would be most likely to detect this type of program that you downloaded. If you use SpywareBlaster (FREE), it makes changes to your registry to prevents most spyware from even being able to download or start up on your computer but since it's free, they don't updated it daily so there is a slight lapse in protection which is why you should also have a good active anti-spyware to detect these rogue programs. Your firewall should have alerted you that it was trying to dial out but you may have allowed it thinking it was "normal". You should have been able to use the many free programs like Spybot, Ad-Aware, various online scans from the major AV companies, etc. to remove this trojan without having to spend money. Who did you send the $30.00 to? Be very careful about downloading Active X Controls these days, i was downloading one three days ago, and a trojan horse called Zlob using the ruse of an anti virus protection went right past my anti virus like it wasn't even there, it also goes thru your firewall, I had three at the time. You can read about it on the internet by punching in VirusProtectPro removal, thats how I found out about it. It attaches to your computer to swindle you out of your money. Which, I'm pleased to say I do not fall for....lol. VirusProtectPro is a bad thing, that installs itself with Active X controls. It took me three days and 30 bucks to get rid of it, so please be careful. Have a good day, stay safe !!! Kathy No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition.
