We recently discussed this same issue out here. You should probably contact
Yahoo!, Inc. tech department to find out the name of that file. I've tried
to find it and haven't had any luck. Every program treats these things
differently. For example, Internet Explorer saves the URL's typed into the
address field in the History section. Outlook 2003 saves email addresses
typed into an email in a Nickname file ending with .NK2, etc. I went
through a lot of the files in the YM Cache folder and other files and was
not able to find a file with any Yahoo ID's. I think this file would be in
your Profiles folder somewhere, instead of the Cache folder since it seems
the list should be linked to a particular Yahoo ID name (aka Profile)
instead of just in the general Cache folder. I use a couple of Yahoo ID's
on my YM so I have separate Profiles with the archived messages for each in
their respective folders. I haven't found that file in the Profile folders
either though.

Your other option is to do a full uninstall, clean-up and reinstall, which
should get rid of it. Even if you save your Profile/Archive files during
this clean-up and reinstall, if the nickname list shows back up, then at
least you know it's one of the .dat files saved in the Archive file you
saved so it would be easier to find. Here's my blog on how to do a clean
installation of YM.

yahoo.html

If you want to look around more than I have, go to your C:\Program
Files\Yahoo!\Messenger and sort the files/folders by "Date Modified" in the
Details View. Then go to YM and type a new Yahoo ID (even if you have to
make one up) into the contact field and send that made up ID an IM. Then go
back to the Messenger folder and sort by "Date Modified" again and look
around in that folder and all of the sub-folders for a file or folder
modified in the past minute and that might help isolate the file/folder.

Let us all know if you find it.

Here's the contact info for Yahoo!, Inc. for the USA. If you are in another
country, let me know as I have other contact info for other countries as
well.

BTW.. I like your email addy. It also reminds folks how to spell your name.
;-) I guess mine would have to be Not_an_F_1V_1S_NO_T_1B_1N_1D since I've
had my last name spelled with any mix and number of those letters over the
years. LOL

Subject: [Y!M] Need help clearing history on search for contacts bar

Someone please help me as soon as possible! when I am in Yahoo Messenger,
and I click on the little 'down arrow' on the right hand side of the
"SEARCH FOR CONTACTS' BAR which opens up, a list of contacts opens which I
can scroll down on, showing all those contacts whose contact information I
have typed into that bar so I could either IM , phone them via my computer,
or email them...I want to erase this cache/history...I have done it before,
but am having no success now.. I thought by going into MY COMPUTER> HARD
DRIVE C> PROGRAM FILES> YAHOO> MESSENGER> and next right clicking on CACHE
and deleting would resolve it, but it does not clear this particular list of
people I have contacted.. Please tell me how to empty this information
so it will be emptied and not have a list which opens up to scroll
on....thanks for your
help... you can send me a direct email to [email protected]
