OK. I was able to see them this time. I'm not sure if you mentioned earlier that you were using Vista but I recognized the file hierarchy as being Vista's but in either case, it looks like, in the picture-2.tif file, that the 20090504-zdraftsman file is in the correct folder.
Not that it's major but it is helpful, something you might want to change in your file settings is to show the file type. For example, at the end of 20090504-zdraftsman, there should be a .dat but you probably have your file settings set to hide file extensions. I'm not sure why MS even allows file extensions to be hidden as it makes it too easy for someone to send a .exe (executable) file instead of a .jpg (picture) file and if you save it, you never see the .exe. This is a dangerous thing for folks to do and could result in someone deleting the wrong type of file. So, in your case, set Recuva to find all files with zdraftsman in them. The other thing you could do is a regular file search using Vista's search feature in the Start Menu, and then search for all files with *zdraftsman in the file name and see if that will locate where they went. Maybe Recuva isn't finding them as they may have been moved to another folder still in the file folder hierarchy and I'm not sure if Recuva looks in the normal file folder hierarchy. I'm guessing you know how to make Vista allow you to run a program as Administrator since Recuva may need to run that way. If you don't know, a simple way is to right-click on the Start Menu button for the program and in that menu, click "Run As Administrator". This has to be done with certain types of programs with Vista. It kept opening with Windows Picture Viewer as "No preview available" although it was showing up as an attachment. In, picture 1, the YM Archives reader, I see only a dozen or so names of contacts so those are likely just the ones you've had in the past few days since you installed YM9. I'm still thinking the preferences were defaulted to NO ARCHIVES when you installed YM9 and that caused you to lose them. (Renee is the same as live for master). I did a search many different ways... 2009*.* ; 20*.* (you get the picture) and yielded no files... I have my Vista set to see all files in Windows Explorer. I will check the Recuva again tomorrow, now that I know what to look for in the file name and extension. I will let you know on the outcome of that search and will look in the virus vault of AVG again. When you say the archives are showing but not the actual files but then refer to saving them to a Word document and having them back... what did you save and what is showing? I just want to be sure we're on the same page, so to speak. The Archived chat's are .dat files and each IM session is saved in a folder under the name of the yahoo ID of the person you were IM'ing with but the files inside each folder start with a date format followed by your Yahoo ID, then .dat, for example, 20090505-lennyv. dat, but I would think you need to find the folders as there could be many files with the same name since each person you IM'ed with on a particular day would have the same file name but their files would have been in their respective folders. Probably if you did a search for .dat files and put the date range of when yours went missing, that would find the individual files but then you would have the problem of sorting them. I'm guessing Recuva has that type of search parameter. If you did a search for all files with your Yahoo ID as part of the name and ending with .dat, you should find them. You should probably go to the Recuva forums for more detailed help in finding the files with Recuva since I'm not more than a novice at using it. There are 3rd party programs that can also open Yahoo Archived .dat files, once you find them, so you could read the file and then file it into it's proper folder but that would be time consuming depending on how many IM sessions you are talking about. It would be best if you can find the folders with the IM sessions intact inside the folders. Even then, you'd have to go through your Contact list and search for each folder name based on the Yahoo ID of your contacts. The moral to this story for anyone else reading this.... I have saved them to a Word document for the time being. None the less, I am happy to have them back. I will use the back up service, backup redundancy is always the best. I did not know about the online service and thank you for giving me the information. I did run the Recuva program, alas not knowing the file name or extension, I was not able to find it. Thank you again for all your help.... especially the advise on the backup website options and the Recuva program. I will bookmark your blog today and check it regularly. Take care, Jeri
