Dear Lenny,

Thanks muchly again. My turn (not inline...though, yes, I think you DID spell
it right :) ):

LENNY - Yes, my spell-checker didn't even highlight on discombobulated so I
figured I got it right. Of course, if it would have corrected it, I wouldn't
now admit I misspelled it in the first place. LOL

* I doubt Trillian's presence is a factor in this as I recall it happening
before I even thought of using it. Yes, it connects somehow to YIM so as to
"read" my "Buddy List" and interface with other users there, but that's only
if/when I "let" it sign in. If I sign out, then I can run the regular YIM
client, log in that way and chat with anyone I wish. It's only with the
photo-sharing that my regular YIM hiccups.

LENNY - OK. I have never used Trillian so I really cannot say whether any
plug-ins it installs could interfere with YM's normal usage or not.

* Yeah, I also never heard of an "installation mode" with ZA, certainly not on
the "free" version that I use. To your knowledge, does your "preferred"
not-directly-to-Yahoo! download/install method circumvent or otherwise avoid
this somehow?

LENNY - The GOOD thing about doing the FULL 10MB-14MB version download (size
depends on YM version) is that you have the entire program downloaded onto
your computer and then install it by clicking on the .exe file. It then goes
through the process of installing on your computer and you have to uncheck the
junk you don't want, such as Yahoo Toolbars, etc.. Of course, like with
installing any software, it's always a good idea to reboot the computer right
afterwards to help make sure things get put into place properly. With the YM
Installer Version, available from Yahoo's website, you get a smaller
Installation Program of less than 500KB which then has to connect to the
internet and starts downloading the rest of the program. Since, when dealing
with the internet, there are times where the signal will get compromised,
packet errors, etc.,, it means one of these other packets could get
compromised and you end up with a buggy installation. I really do not know
how many other ways to say this... USE A FULL PROGRAM, NOT AN INSTALLER
VERSION with any software where it's available. The Installer Version of YM
is just Yahoo's way of being lazy, IMO. They could easily offer the full
version from their own website, just like the sites like FileHippo.com,
Download.com, etc., but I guess they are trying to save a few MB's of
bandwidth or server time... which is pretty bad. Further, when using the
Installer Version and then the IV has to connect to the Yahoo Servers via the
internet to download the rest of the program, there is more of a chance of
your firewall or other security programs blocking of slowing down a file from
being installed which could result in bugs.

* The reason I asked if the address of your blog article was correct is
because you wrote it, below, as "...instal-ofl-..." as opposed to
"...install-of-..." Please confirm that it's correct as written, or, if not,
what the correct address would be, please.

LENNY - I copy/pasted the link so it's accurate. I've also clicked on it. I'm
not sure why Google/Blogger/Blogspot makes URL's the way they do. They are
making the URL out of part of the article's HEADLINE but sometimes they'll
drop a word or add a 1. If the link breaks, you can always just click my main
blog link in my sig and you'll see the link to the Yahoo Messenger article on
the left side.

(Aside: Please feel free to email...or {shock!} IM me directly if you think
our conversation is somehow "clogging up" the group. :) )

LENNY - No, it's not clogging things up. This group is relatively quiet
compared to some of the other groups that I belong to which get 25-100
postings a day. Also, it's better for all members of a group to be able to
read all of the various questions/problems so we can all learn from each
other's mistakes. I like learning that way too... rather than waiting for me
to make my own mistakes and then learning the hard way. :-P

Many thanks again.

Bram

I'm going to answer INLINE below to try and keep things from getting too
discombobulated... did I spell that right? LOL I guess I'll find out when I
hit send and my spell-checker kicks in.

Thanks, Lenny, for responding. Please let me follow up on your points one at
a time, and in no particular order...

* As I wrote, so far, and for quite a long time, I've not had a successful
photo-share with anyone, and, as I use Trillian Basic as my default IM client,
I already am logging out/in to YIM in order to even attempt the photo-share to
begin with.

LENNY - I've never used Trillian. Have you talked with other Trillian
users... could it be a cause? I'm presuming it must have some kind of plug-in
to YM for it to read your friends list on YM.

* I do have a firewall (ZoneAlarm), but did not recall anything being blocked.
If, indeed, something WAS flagged along the way, then it was from the
firewall asking me to approve something, which of course I did.

LENNY - Sometimes, when installing a program, and the firewall is on, it will
inadvertently slow-down or stop a small .dll file or .dat file from getting
installed in the right place or right order which can cause bugs in programs.
I use Comodo Pro Firewall (which is also FREE and I actually use the entire
Comodo Internet Security Suite... also FREE) and the CPF has a mode called
"Installation Mode" which they recommend putting the firewall into when
installing a new program so it will not hinder the install as much. I used ZA
a long time ago but I do not recall this feature on ZA... at least not on the
free version.

* I CAN chat with others via my YIM 9.0 client (and, if you wanted, would be
happy to do so with you, too -- YIM:bramweiser) so, to my knowledge, it's only
photo-sharing that doesn't work for me.

LENNY - Quite often, Chat will work fine but YM will be buggy for other
features like the Cam or Photo-Share of File Sharing, etc., as each of these
functions rely on different integrated files within YM. One part can get
messed up while not affecting all the other parts.

* I don't know how to determine if something (a specific DLL, say) is either
missing or buggy...in other words, if something IS missing or buggy, I
wouldn't know how to locate it.

LENNY - I don't think there is a way to determine this which is why, if
nothing else is fixing the problem, I recommend doing the full uninstall,
clean-up and reinstall with a FULL version that is less likely to have bugs.
Also, turn off your firewall when doing the install.

* I thought the reformatting, etc., would have surely resolved this, but was
surprised to see that, not only was it NOT resolved, but that the same issue
remained even afterward, and at every point (as opposed to something else
popping up, if anything had to).

LENNY - The reformatting of your HD and reinstallation of Windows will not
have any effect on YM. I'm presuming that when you reformatted, you had to
reinstall your OS and all programs or did you clone your HD from a previously
known working image taken before it was reformatted? If you did have to
reinstall YM and you used the http://messenger.yahoo.com site to download
from, then you got the Installer Version of YM, not a full version from one of
the sites I reference on my blog article. Further, if ZA is blocking
something and ZA was installed after the reformat, then it very well may have
blocked the same things in follow-up installs of YM. These are just theories
since I do not know for certain if ZA is blocking something or not. Only
trial and error will tell unless you go to the ZA forums and someone there
might be able to look at your log files and see.

Did I miss anything? I hope not. :)

LENNY - I think we've pretty much covered it all. That's why I wrote that
article a couple of years ago... it seems to be the best way to install YM on
the dozens of computers that I've installed it myself and the hundreds of
folks that I've helped out here and in other forums.

So, you're basically saying to re-try an install (albeit following your blog
post -- just checking, is the address correct?) as the intended "solution"?

LENNY - Yep! ;-) Yes, the link below is the correct link to my article. It
starts with http:// and ends with .html in case it breaks in this reply. You
can also go to my main blog link in my sig and then you'll see the list of
blog articles on the left and the Yahoo Messenger article is the 5th one
down.

Is it odd that, over several versions of YIM installs, THIS continues to be
the main issue I'm dealing with?

LENNY - Considering you've presumably been using the YM Installer Version to
install YM and that you've had ZA installed when you've done each previous
install, then the end result may be the same each time. Use either the FULL
version or possibly turn off ZA (or put it in the installation mode if it has
one) when installing YM and see if that gives you better results.

Thanks again for your time and thoughts.

LENNY - Your welcome.

Bram

The transfer speed also depends on the other user's internet speed and last
but not least on Yahoo Servers and how they are working. This issue happens
to me on a regular basis also.

I've found that photo-share will work with some friends/family and not others
for a variety of reasons. If both folks have high-speed internet and
photo-share isn't working, both users should sign out and then sign back in,
to likely get into another server sector and then try. If it's still not
working, try photo-share with one or more other people to see if it will work
with them. Ask them if they are able to photo-share with anyone else. If they
are, then it's not likely the Yahoo Server issue so then you can start looking
at your own installation of YM.

There are no easy fixes to a buggy installation of YM, the simplest thing to
do is to uninstall YM, do a cleanup of your computer and then reinstall a FULL
version of YM (NOT FROM YAHOO!).

I have a blog article with details on how to do a clean install.
http://lennyvasbinder.blogspot.com/2007/11/how-i-always-do-clean-instal-ofl-yahoo.html

The article explains the BIG difference between doing a FULL version install
from one of the 3rd party download sites, versus doing the Yahoo Installer
download, which I find to cause most of the buggy installs.

Last, but not least, make sure your firewall and other security programs are
not blocking one or more parts of YM from properly installing. All it takes
is for one of the thousands of .dll files to not install properly and YM will
have glitches and bugs. This is another reason that the FULL download version
works better than the Yahoo Installer version.

Subject: [Y!M] Pixellated or otherwise invisible pictures shared in YIM

Hello,

As a long-time lurker in Y!M, I've now gathered up the...courage? ;)...to
write in with a request for advice and assistance, please, on an issue I've
had with YIM for a long time.

Ever since (I think it was) an 8.x version (or was it 7.x? Well, in any case,
I now have 9.0 installed), I've been unable to truly share pictures with
another user, whether it's my seeing their pictures or them seeing mine.

At best, a picture comes through as pixellated...that's if it comes through as
it should at all.

(I should say that I have a DSL connection, so it shouldn't take TOO long --
maybe a couple of seconds, I'd presume -- for a picture to travel in either
direction.)

Now, I know some oft-given advice here involves a true deletion (wiping?) of
the version on one's hard drive then re-installing YIM anew, but I'll note
that, last year, I had to reformat my hard drive (don't ask :) ), and, even
so, after reinstalling YIM onto my system, this issue remained, and continues
to "haunt" me to this day. (I've tried to share pictures with various users,
and am never successful regardless of whom I try to share with...at least so
far.)

I should also mention that I normally use Trillian Basic anyway for YIM
conversations, but the inability of that application to share pictures is due
to its "freeware" status, which is an entirely different kettle of fish...:)

May I please ask for your thoughts, then? I'll hope to hear from some of you
soon, if you feel like writing back.

Thanks,
Bram
