Are you doing the installing or them? Since they've had one or more unsuccessful installs, they likely have registry errors in the Yahoo Messenger section. See my blog article about the best way to install YM and although it's written for XP, Vista is basically the same except the Add/Remove Programs is now called Programs And Features.
Make sure they are an administrator on the Vista computer and after doing the full download of YM from one of the 3rd party sites, have then right click on the .exe file and choose "Run As Administrator" which helps to get a better install. Also, after downloading, get offline and then turn off any firewall they may have. When I got my Vista laptop in 2008, I did not have any problems installing YM as a full download, although the UAC did pop up at several stages. I am the only user and made my main account an administrator account but even then, some programs still have to be changed to "Run As Administrator" to get them to work right. I know I had this problem when trying to install Spybot. The downside of running a program as administrator is that if the program ever gets corrupted by a virus, it would be even more vulnerable... but that's where having a good antivirus, antimalware and firewall comes into play. I like and use the FREE Comodo Internet Security. Have them come out here and post as you may be losing important bits of information between what they are doing and what you are able to tell us. I'm reading the blog article now to see if I disagree with any of Yahoo's suggestions and I'll send a follow-up post if I do. One of them just bought a new computer last Friday with Vista home edition and they can not download the new messenger. It starts and then stops about half way through. I had them go all through the steps at the yahoo messenger blog, http://www.ymessengerblog.com/blog/2008/10/27/installing-90-on-windows-vista / about installing on Vista...It didn't help. I am not sure what to do now. ------------------------------------ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Unsubscribe from Yahoo_Messenger mailto:[email protected] Switch from Normal to Digest mail mailto:[email protected] Switch from Normal to NoMail mail mailto:[email protected] Switch from Digest or NoMail to Normal mail mailto:[email protected] Write to the Moderators and Owner of the List: mailto:[email protected] Suggestions for improvements to the List should be sent to the "owner" address listed above.Yahoo!
