Most versions of YM have the + sign icon which is a simple way to start the adding of a friend (contact) process. Also, under the Contacts Menu, the top choice is "Add A Contact".
Remember that when adding friends, there are scammers out there so proceed with caution with anyone that you do not personally know and even with those you do personally know, when it comes to giving too much personal information out.
