My concern was that swallowing the exception might leave things in a bad state.
I tested on MacOS, and it looks like everything works out in the end. My one
final quibble, though, is that the comment about unit tests is a little
misleading. I just exercised this code path by running a node manager on
MacOS, not through a unit test.
