[~snemeth] [~quapaw] are these comments to be resolved in this item, or a
followup? As most of the patch is moving around the existing code, mostly
unchanged, I'm voting for the idea of a global, larger cleanup jira after the
related patches are merged to avoid any conflict resolution related problems on
the dependent items.
