*YCL response to the SABC 2009 Election Coverage Plan*

*Thursday 08 January 2009*

The Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] notes the SABC 2009
elections coverage plan unveiled by the Acting Group Chief Executive Officer
of the SABC, Gab Mampone, which states that the public broadcaster is
committed in providing coverage that is fair, balanced, accurate and
relevant, in order to assist South African voters to make their choice at
the polling station; and that the public broadcaster will adhere to the
ICASA license conditions which requires the public broadcaster's news or
current affairs programmes in respect to the elections to be impartial,
objective and fair.

The YCLSA has on numerous occasions expressed its deep concerns about the
abuse of the SABC News division by Dr Snuki Zikalala and his 1996 class
project bosses to fight internal political battles in the movement, and our
concerns around the abuse of the SABC News to promote the newly formed party
by ANC dissidents, including the non-coverage of critical issues affecting
the working class and the poor. Unfortunately these concerns have never been
seriously addressed given the imbedded factionalism which reigns supreme at
the corridors of the public broadcaster.

In a unequal and class society like South Africa, the media establishment
including the SABC will use the resources at its disposal to advance and
promote the ideas of the ruling elite in order to suppress the ideas of the
oppressed class which is the working class and the poor.

The YCLSA urges the Acting Group Chief Executive Officer Mampone as the
commander-in-chief of the SABC News to be directly involved and take full
responsibility of the SABC News Division with a view of eliminating any
political biasness and manipulation of news coverage by Dr Zikalala in
favour of his political henchman and women. This will go a long in ensuring
that the coverage of the elections is impartial, fair and balanced.
