Producers of the Soapies clearly misses the undermines the fact that Orphanages are pilling and most young males and females do not leave to see the day they enter Tertiary because they will be dead by AIDS. I am fully aware of that at the Top of the Screen Age Restriction is indicated but most Parents work late and others work night Shift, therefore even those who are under the specified age limit and who are home alone watches it and end up Learning a thing or two. Producers of these soapies should atleast have the audesity to Hint Condoms or the Board should consider changing time slaughts. The interest of the station should be on the creation of lifetime audience but the possibilities of that are challenged by the Broadcasting Programs which are not HIV/AIDS Conscious. Some comrades might understand the arguments regarding the “media imperialism thesis.” The sensationalisation or what I call MTVisation of our public Broadcaster is an indication of this. I am off the view that Soapies should not be banned per se, but their content should be regulated so that they stop promoting consumerism and start playing an educational role, what some may call ‘edutainment’ and ‘infotainment’. The majority of working class people in South Africa watch Soapies even though they don’t really identify with them. They engage in what can be termed ‘symbolic distancing’ and this is what capitalism wants in the first place. I think we should move from this understanding and then start making Soapies informative and educational; this is how we would be able to access many young people. On this one we can beat Capitalism in its own game? Further, Soapies should not be our primary focus; TV programmes such as JIKA MA JIKA should not be banned, but be moved from the prime time slot. Programmes like these should not play during these times, and this would also include Generations, Days Of Our Lives, Isidingo and others. Shows such as Zola 7, Khumbulekhaya, Take 5, Current Affairs, and Learning Channel should be played during this important period of their day. I am also proposing Labour Affairs as a new programme going to be played in this particular period for at least twice a day, what do you think comrade? The ruling classes are using the SABC and e.tv as a communication tool to suppress and defocus the working class youth from their fundamental struggle and immediate demands.Marx saw an analogy between ideas purported or transmitted via the media and the processes that typify its social order. Thus in the German Ideology he illustrates how the ruling class uses organs of class rule to buttress their hegemony .The ideas of the ruling class are in every epoch the ruling ideas ... as they rule as a class and determine the extent and compass of an epoch.It is self-evident that they do this in its whole range, hence among other things rule also as thinkers, as producers of ideas, and regulate the production and distribution of the ideas of their age: thus their ideas are the ruling ideas of the epoch.One wonders if we did not have soapies would we have people like Khanyisile Mbau.
