CHICKENS ARE COMING HOME TO ROOST – FOR COPE

By: Kaizer Mohau

Recent developments within the newly formed political party debatably
called “Congress of the People” proves many of us to be correct in our
assertion that COPE is just a bunch of Polokwane rejects whose
fundamental intention was and remains obsession with power.

Whether Lekota or Shilowa spins their lungs out, what they are
currently dealing with is precisely what gave birth to COPE. Grindrod
and Lynda Odendaal’s resignations mimic what Lekota and others did
when they were strategically defeated in Polokwane during the ANC
conference of 2007.

The fact that Odendaal and Grindrod made far-reaching allegations
about the party and the style of leadership in COPE shows that indeed
the Congress of the People is suffering from party political identity.

When they left the ANC after the re-calling of Thabo Mbeki – in what
is known as “serving divorce papers” Lekota claimed that theirs is to
defend democracy and our constitution, without clarifying the
fundamental basis on which this defence of democracy and the
constitution will unfold they went ahead and recruited political Tom,
Dick and Harrys of this world – without firstly developing
organisational principles, programs and more importantly a political
identity unique to their organisation.

Perhaps, people are correct to argue that most of them are doing
precisely what they claimed is happening in the ANC – while it is too
early to want them to behave otherwise – this conduct further
indicates that it is them the Lekota gangster who were dictatorial
when they were in the ANC and not the ANC which has so far attracted
many of their members in recent few Months.

If you leave a political party due to some problems imaginary or
factual – it is natural that you will join a party which is different
and in line with what you want – but in this case the opposite is true
– Terror Lekota left the ANC because the ANC did not want him to
continue being a dictator – thus ANC members voted him and others out
of the leadership.

It is my humble view that COPE will never last until the next
elections, it will actually die a natural death very soon than
expected– its coming to being came as a matter of a political and
historical accident – the fact that they had to spend nights, days and
weeks trying to conceptualise a name demonstrate how accidental is
their existence within the body politic of our country.

While its coming to being brought some interesting and exciting
political developments with it, however, it is very regrettable that
they want to refuse the reality that they are nothing more than a
bunch of political lunatics rejected by the majority of those who once
followed and appreciated their leadership.

I mean political parties are not formed just like baking cakes; they
are informed by a number of things especially in countries like ours.
Amongst those ingredients is the ideological identity – which most of
them knew that they lack but took chances. As a result majority of
their supporters and members are now feeling betrayed because nothing
organisational is developing except for their leadership.

Perhaps they should all rejoin the ANC and learn as much as they can
before leaving again – including taking classes on organisational
development.
