I am once again happy to participate in this forum. I have been hit by a chronic headache that doctors prescribed good medication including keeping a distance from computers. I am declared fit to rejoin the cyberworld. I am however late to bring back some discussions that I have missed during my short sick break.
The question posed by comrade Dumisani regarding the role of unions is correct. When is the time for negotiations for better working conditions including package increases because we all know that July is the month for effecting resolved percentage increase. This issue of backdating is bad for workers. Economic scholars will tell you that PAYE will be high when the income is high. So our increases will be taxed higher than expected and one is not sure whether a tax return will bring back all our monies.
I am writing here as a worker who is to receive a salary (with the annual increase). We contribute our hard earned resources to maintain offices of unions so that those who occupy the offices are able to guard and champion our interests. Clearly, Nehawu and other public servants unions were and are aware that government increase is in July, why would negotiations start in July?
None of us are familiar with the process. I was in a Nehawu meeting last week Tuesday. The leadership of my branch confirmed that there was no briefing as yet regarding salary packages. I am not interested in the salary increase, I am interested in the increase in housing, vehicle, medical and other package related benefits.
We can not be a society of defending the delays of those we voted for to champion our interests. The CC approach should be taken forward with those entrusted to lead a revolution. There were no consultations regarding our feelings and thinking around issues of package increase. I am fully in agreement with Dumisani regarding the behaviour of public sector unions - in particular Cosatu affiliates.
I appeal to anyone with information regarding the negotiations to keep us informed of the progress and backlogs that are taking place. Where are we?

i thought that we are familiar with processes in the bargaining process. but to remind comrades, we were witnessing strikes by doctors throughout the country until now in july. in the bargaining process, it will be difficult for the representatives of cosatu to alienate salary increment for non striking workers while the resolution that you want to implement include those who are on strike. also in the employer's side, they will be raising the matter of administering salary increment for each employee one by one, and i believe that you know how difficult that will be.
the process in handled in the best interest of workers and also in the best interest of our community (like to fight for the expelled doctors to be reinstated). the process is at a final stage where cents are been counted and in due course we will get results.

It is very disturbing even on the issue of servicing of the membership by leadership, my heart get broken when I see how many people join the PSA cause they claim that their grievances are resolved very fast as compared to the Cosatu aligned unions and the PSA is using this advantage to poach members to join them. I think its high time that our Cosatu aligned unions should do an analysis of membership and draw programmes that will engage members to stay with us. I was very happy by the resolution taken in the Free State Cosatu congress, where they acknowledge that they have lost members and they will develop a plan to mobilize members to join Cosatu affiliates but also to ensure they retain the current membership.
