31/07/2009 CWU DOWN TOOLS AGAINST TELKOM Communication Workers union members in three of its provinces namely Gauteng; Kwazulu Natal & Western Cape intent to down tools by staying away from work from the 3rd to the 4th of August 2009. Whilst not reporting for work, our members will be picketing at key workplaces of Telkom in the three provinces, whilst in Gauteng, our members will also be picketing at the CCMA where Telkom and CWU will be meeting on the 3rd August 2009 on the request by Telkom. CWU members in Gauteng are also expected to march to Telkom Head Office on the 4th August 2009 to deliver a memorandum outlining their grievances and demands. CWU members in other provinces will also be following the strike program as per the notice given to the company on the 27th July 2009, which includes; “Go-Slows” and “Overtime Ban”. The union will be staging a national march on the 11th of August 2009 in the event that an agreement with Telkom has not been reached. The two parties (CWU & Telkom) will be meeting under the auspices of the CCMA on the 3rd of August 2009, following a meeting of the Telkom Board that was held recently. Telkom is warned by CWU member to make meaningful offers or face a serious showdown with the union as members would not accept conditional agreements. Our members are still adamant that their salary scales adjustments should precede the 7.5% salary increment and both the adjustment and increment must be implemented retrospectively to the 1st April 2009. Another burning matter was the equitable distribution of Telkom profits to its employees. We therefore call upon all our members in Gauteng; Kwazulu Natal & Western Cape to join the actions planned for the 3rd 4th August 2009, and call on our leadership and members in other provinces to continue with their pickets; overtime ban and go-slows as a build-up to the national march of 11 August 2009 and subsequent actions.
