*THE PYA AFFIRMS ITS SUPPORT FOR CASTER SEMENYA AND CALLS FOR NEDBANK TO RECONSIDER ITS DECISION* *08 October 2009*
The Progressive Youth Alliance (ANC YL, YCL and SASCO) commends the ANC for rallying behind Caster when the private sector opportunistically used the Chuene debacle to deviate from its social responsibilities. The PYA re-affirms its support for Caster and will intensify the provision of practical support to her family. *PYA on Nedbank’s withdrawal of sponsorship* The withdrawal of Nedbank as a sponsor for Athletics South Africa affirms the intransigent attitude that still prevails in Lily-white corporate SA. The ASA does not consist of Caster only nor does the board consist of Chuene as an individual in isolation. The people that benefit from such a sponsorship are those that work hard to ensure that their careers as athletes are a success and moreover those that do not have access to resources. The PYA calls on Nedbank to reconsider its position as this raises questions on their commitment to transformation and empowerment. Nedbank still has lots of transformation work to do, and their refusal to retain the sponsorship will have consequences. The PYA wonders if this was a white athlete or if it was the rugby team, would the same attitude been used to address the matter. SRC Elections The PYA has thus far won an absolute majority of SRC elections across institutions of higher learning. This includes the University of Free State, Wits University, North West University (Vaal Campus) UNISA, and we attained improved our majority in the University of Cape Town. The PYA will continue to work in unity to ensure that all campuses in South Africa are led by PYA Students’ Representative Councils.
