*CWU REACTION TO THE SOWETAN HEADLINE STORY*

*12March 2010*

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) abhors the Sowetan’s headline story
“SACP apologises for booing Malema”, penned by Zukile Majova. This headline
is misleading and personifies gutter journalism engulfing our country
post-1994 democratic dispensation.

We are interested to know if both Fikile-Ntsikelelo Moya and Willie Bokaba
(senior editors at the Sowetan) we were ‘high’ when their approved this
story by Majova. It is disheartened to see this esteemed publication, the
Sowetan, which posses reach history owing to its predecessor The World
Newspapers is degenerating and acts as a mouthpiece of a certain African
chauvinist, populist and bully cabal within our movement.

In no way given the outcomes and the statements issued by our vanguard –
SACP and the Alliance leader – the ANC – indicates that the SACP apologises
to ANCYL President Julius Malema. In fact Julius Malema was never booed in
the SACP Special National Congress as a person or a leader of the ANCYL.
This was his self-invention assisted by the like-minded journalist like
Majova to liquidate the key issues and deliberations of the Special National
Congress which sought to embarrass SACP National Chairperson Cde Gwede
Mantashe and the entire SACP leadership.

We support the thrust of the summary as indicated in the statement issued by
both the SACP and ANC after the bilateral. The summary says “*the President
of the ANC in summarising indicated that mistakes have been made on both
sides. The SACP, in the context of the discussions, re-affirmed its regret
at the booing that occurred at the Special National Congress in December
2009. Both parties agreed that there would be no further personalised public
attacks on each other”*. This we fully support and Majova should reported on
as opposed to being creative and insults our intelligence as the advanced
detachment of the working class and the poor.

As CWU we strongly believe that a refresher course should be arranged for
Sowetan’s journalists and others to improve on their writing and reporting
skills.
