Urban Voices Celebrates Africa Month by Introducing YASUS AFARI: The Edutainer,
Performance Poet, Philosopher and Author from Jamaica in May 2010 If you have
loved Mutabaruka, Linton Kwesi Johnson, and similar artists who have graced our
shores, Yasus Afari will be someone you must check out as he is an intellectual
performer, educator, Rastafari diplomat and entertainer all wrapped into one.
Attending a workshop or a performance of the man, will leave one refreshed and
informed if not enlightened.
Urban Voices will host an evening of performance with Yasus Africa on Friday
7th May at 7pm at the Market Theatre Lab, Newtown.
Although internationally known, Yasus is virtually unknown in South Africa.
Executive Director of Urban Voices Ms Roshnie Moonsammy says “with this visit,
Urban Voices remains a leading voice for linking Africans in the continent and
its Diaspora in a meeting of minds and souls which aims at learning from each
others ¨´as we face the massive challenges of the day in our world.”
Performance poet, author and educator, Yasus is up to the challenge and builds
on the visits of other great artists who have performed at Urban Voices. He has
produced a number of CD´s and boasts a powerful discography.
He is also the author of Eye Pen and, Overstanding Rastafari: Jamaica's Gift to
the World (2007). In explaining the book, he points out Rastafari is not a
religion and need not be. It is unnecessary to invent another religion. I think
we need a livity. Livity would mean the formula, the methodology to nurture
life, sustain life and to enhance our social relationships .and assessing all

Yasus Afari hosted by Kush kush Kush productions, KwaDukuza Lodge, Hawkridge,

4) Friday 14th May from 9pm onwards – Yasus Afari in Concert with Azania – All
Nations Club, 281 Victoria Rd, Salt River Cape Town. Entrance R50
5) Workshop hosted by Yasus Afari Thursday 20th May with the female inmates of
“Sun City Prison” Entrance: Only inmates no out mates allowed.
