*Union deal ends Rea Vaya strike*

Sapa, IOL, 11 May 2010

Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) drivers will return to work on Tuesday after their union dispute with the City of Johannesburg was "successfully resolved", the bus operator said.

"The union recognition dispute at the Rea Vaya Bus Operating Company has been successfully resolved," Rea Vaya spokesperson Jackie Huntly said in a statement.

"Rea Vaya operations will resume as per normal from tomorrow [Tuesday] and tickets will be sold from all stations."

The drivers wanted the city to recognise their union, the South African Municipal Workers' Union (Samwu).

She said they had agreed with Samwu that the union could apply for a jurisdiction order at the Labour Court. If granted the order would allow the union to have representation in the bargaining council.

"In principle Samwu is recognised at plant [depot] level, pending the ruling of the Labour Court."

Huntly said they were of the view that if Samwu was recognised, it would create problems at the bargaining council as the union was in the local government sector and the bus operating company in another sector.

Samwu spokesperson Tahir Sema said earlier on Monday that the workers also wanted to be part of the local government sector.

"The services are operating using capacity from local government, so it should not fall in a grey area. Accepting the demand will render much help to the BRT system."

On Monday evening, Sema said the union had not yet been informed of the any settlement.

"We will probably receive a full report tomorrow [Tuesday] morning."

The drivers began striking on Monday morning.

The BRT, which aimed to integrate public transport in cities, had various owners, including Metrobus and Putco, but was managed by the City of Johannesburg.

Samwu, which was representing BRT workers on an interim basis, said its demands were "legit" and "easy to achieve". -- Sapa
