*ANCYL leadership vows to get rid of ‘unwanted elements’*

JOHANNESBURG - While certain structures of the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) face revolt from disgruntled members, the youth wing’s national leadership has vowed to rid the league of “unwanted elements.”

ANCYL spokesman Floyd Shivambu yesterday told The Citizen that, come what may, order would be restored in the youth wing.

“While people have the right to voice their opinion, we are aware of the few elements that have tried to disrupt the vision of the ANC Youth League.

“They will, however, be taken to task over this,” Shivambu said.

His comments come in the wake of speculation that the ANCYL was under siege.

This follows a congress held in the Eastern Cape at the weekend where unruly delegates and a bomb scare disrupted the congress while the registration of delegates proved to be a mammoth task.

The congress had to be adjourned until further notice.

ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe said the ruling party was worried about “anarchy” evident within the youth wing.

However, Shivambu rubbished this saying there was no crisis.

“To say there is crisis, is over exaggerating things.

“This weekend was a case of delegates disagreeing with some procedures.

“But we want to make it clear that we won’t keep disruptive members within the ANCYL but only those who hold the values of discipline,” he said, adding the youth wing’s national general council in July would be a peaceful one.

This is not the first incident where infighting and intolerance has reigned in the ANCYL.

In April, leader Julius Malema was booed and a T-shirt bearing his likeness burnt by a faction of disgruntled delegates at a provincial congress in Limpopo.

Political analyst Aubrey Matshiqi said it was clear the ANCYL was going through a difficult period but pointed out that divisions have always been there.
