*BAFANA BAFANA – DO IT FOR HARRY GWALA!*

*21 June 2010*

The *NATIONAL UNION OF METALWORKERS OF SOUTH AFRICA* (Numsa) calls on Bafana
Bafana to hoist the South African flag high in their World Cup match against
France tomorrow, 22 June 2010.

This World Cup has provided Bafana Bafana and the football fraternity a rare
and major opportunity to contribute to uniting our nation and much needed
nation-building in the midst of demagogue, prato-fascism and racist rhetoric
by some of our leaders. Sport, particularly soccer as a working class sport
in our country continues to play a major role in breaking down racial and
cultural barriers, and the World Cup has offered our country an opportunity
to dismiss demagogue and bigotry.

The international football fraternity and FIFA in particular were central in
the liberation struggle of the oppressed majority by isolating apartheid and
fascist South Africa from global football competitions in solidarity with
our people’s struggle for freedom and liberation. The 2010 World Cup is a
continuation of that well-founded relationship FIFA has with our country and
its people as we move forward in building a better and just South Africa and
world order.

We call on Bafana Bafana to apply the militancy and radicalism of Cde Harry
Munt’omdala Gwala on the field of play by performing well and doing the
country proud. The opportunities Bafana has of playing international
competitions are the direct result of the sacrifices and struggles waged by
Gwala’s generation. Therefore, Bafana owes Gwala’s generation and the youth
of our country a well deserved performance and victory as part of unleashing
our power and influence in advancing the country’s major goals.

We call on all South Africans, especially the workers and the youth, to
rally behind Bafana in their quest to make South Africa and the continent
proud.
