Be afraid, Julius, be very afraid Ponder on what Zuma did to the
'all-powerful' Mbeki Jul 13, 2010 10:50 PM | By S'Thembiso Msomi

*S'Thembiso Msomi: *"Like presidential candidates," says Todd Hayes to
Professor Stephen Malley, "they announce their candidacy by standing in
front of an audience and saying they will not run for president." Hayes, a
character played by Andrew Garfield in the 2007 movie Lions for Lambs, is
telling Malley (played by Robert Redford) about the state of US politics.
But he might as well have been talking about our state of affairs here in
South Africa. A local politician who is bold enough to declare his ambition
for higher office is as rare as a Lionel Messi goal. Was it not one Jacob
Zuma who, out of the blue in April 2001, issued the following statement: "I
have felt it important to state publicly that I have no intention or desire
to stand for the position of the president." Zuma, the deputy president of
both the country and the ANC at the time, went on to declare his loyalty to
President Thabo Mbeki. Very few would have been aware that a power struggle
between the two was raging - not to mention that Msholozi fancied himself to
be presidential material. This is why ANC Youth League president Julius
Malema should be afraid - very afraid. Not only is the young-lion-in-chief
battling to suppress a growing mutiny in the provinces, he runs the risk of
being kicked out of his own lair. The threat comes from youth league deputy
president Andile Lungisa who, in comparison to Malema and his abrasive
personality, appears to be as meek as a lamb. For months now, talk among
youth league members - also known as the "Young Lions" - has been that
Lungisa is quietly preparing to launch his bid to unseat Malema as president
at next year's elective conference. This claim has dominated media reports
for the past three months without a word of protest from either Lungisa or
the league. Until last Thursday night, that is. In an unusual development,
Lungisa issued a press statement in which he denied that he harboured
presidential ambitions. "I officially distance myself from all these
allegations and put it on record that I will not do anything that divides
the organisation," he said. He denounced the provincial youth league
organisations that are taking some of the league's leaders to court, in
connection with various disputes, saying: "If any person thought that they
would engage in ill-disciplined activities in my name, they should know that
I do not approve of such actions." Mind you, Lungisa - who is also the
executive chairman of the state-owned National Youth Development Agency -
issued the statement soon after the completion of a meeting of the league's
national working committee in Limpopo. The committee is said to be dominated
by Malema loyalists and one can only imagine the torrid time Lungisa would
have had in this lions' den before agreeing to issue the press
release. Reporters
who cover the Youth League beat tell me that Lungisa was taking no calls on
the subject on Friday, suggesting that he was not exactly enthusiastic about
publicising the statement. But does he stand a realistic chance against the
controversial, but hugely popular, Malema? On the face of it, no. He lacks
Malema's charisma, and his oratory - at which you need to excel if you are
to lead the Young Lions - is as dull as the England soccer team. And the
financial muscle behind him seems minuscule when compared to that of his
rival. But all of this should be cold comfort to Malema, for the same was
said of Zuma before he abruptly ended Mbeki's reign. Uneasy indeed must lie
the head that wears the Young Lions' crown.
