My personal opinion is that Selebi was not guilty. No corruption was proved, that I could see. What I saw was relentless sneering against him in the media, constant hostility from the judge, and in the end, after the conviction and sentence, the DA person said "the media played a big part in getting this sentence". That DA spokesperson spoke the truth. The Selebi trial has been a stampede, not a trial.
Even the YCL statement, Cde Gugu, could only refer to what Selebi might have done, and not what he did, because what he was supposed to have done was not demonstrated in the trial. Now that he has been convicted, untested evidence against Selebi is being read into the record in a different trial where Selebi is not the defendant. It's shocking. This man was doomed. I don't think he was in any faction, actually. He was being played by the Mbeki faction, as a pawn in one of their games. He has no support. He has been eaten by the revolution, sitting at the same table with the enemies of the revolution, served upon by crooks and clowns.
