CWU * CWU Media Release, 19 August 2010* *CWU pledges unwavering support to public sector strike*The Communication Workers Union is pledging its unwavering support and solidarity to the sister unions in the public sector in general and the COSATU affiliated unions in particular as their struggles in pursuit of living wage intensifies. It is our conviction that the public sector workers' demands are more than legitimate and as such the ball is now in the government's court to fulfil part of their bargain.
We have noted with a serious concern some articulations from certain quarters within the movement that demands for a living wage by workers are equal to making political statements by the trade union leadership. If exposing the wage gaps in the labour market in general and the public sector in particular is tantamount to making political statements so be it.
After all COSATU is not allergic to engaging in politics if the need arises as it has from its genesis been not economistic in approach but revolutionary by recognising the link between economics and politics.
The government must resolve these wage negotiations with immediate effect; otherwise we'll join them and bring the economy to a complete standstill.
