One of these children was in tears. Some children laughed at those that were sent home, said a parent, Diana Swart. She dropped her child off at school and saw how four men sat at two tables, ticking off the names of children one by one from a list as they walked through the school gate. *Written warnings * One of the men, Manny Menezies, chairperson of the school's governing body, said the children were sent home to tell their parents to come to school. Menezies said the parents had not responded to letters that had been sent to them from last Wednesday in which they had been requested to make arrangements for the payment of the school fees. The governing body had given parents written warning earlier that should arrangements not be made, their children would be refused entry to the school, that their report cards would be held back and they would not be taken into consideration for merit awards. "We are not talking about parents who were released from paying school fees," said Menezies on Monday. "We are talking about parents who can pay but don't and also don't make arrangements." He said the parents of two of the three children who had been stopped on Monday morning had meanwhile made payment arrangements. All three children were allowed back at school after the DA pledged to help keep the school open, said Menezies. *Dire financial predicament * The school was in a dire financial predicament and would only survive for another two months in its current form as parents of almost half of the roughly 170 pupils qualified for having school fees waived, said Menezies. If the governing body had no more money, five governing body positions would have to be scrapped, which meant the school would have to cope with fewer classes and teachers. "The standard of teaching will drop and no extramural activities will be offered anymore," said Menezies. "Parents who can afford it, will send their children to Lichtenburg schools. "There will remain too few children to keep it an Afrikaans medium school."
