* YCL and COSAS YCLSA Supports COSAS’s Joint Matric Intervention Programme* *13 September 2010*The Young Communist League of South Africa (uFasimba) has observed with concern the dire consequences that the strike and World Cup is likely to have for the 2010 Matriculants who are set to start writing their exams in just over a month. The situation unfortunately is at a point where Trial exams have not been adequately prepared for, resulting in students in other parts of the country demanding that they be allocated those marks to make up for their year marks.
The YCLSA supports the call made by COSAS for a joint matric intervention programme and further calls upon progressive formations SADTU, SASCO and ANCYL to work together with the Department of education to collectively assist in ensuring that Matriculants this year at least have a fair chance when writing their final exams by assisting in tutorial programmes.
We have already seen a sharp decline in the pass rate which has seen a large number of students having to repeat matric or end up with certificates which do not render useful in furthering studies at tertiary level or getting proper employment. The OBE has also failed thousands of students and left them despondent with no option but to subject themselves to the spontaneous transition by the Department of Basic Education. This is a critical time where we need to collectively join hands and assist the Department of Education where possible through tutorial classes and volunteering our time during weekdays and weekends to assist matriculants where possible.
Teachers unfortunately cannot bear the brunt alone. This isn’t about the department but taking a collective responsibility for the education of our students. Students in disadvantaged communities continue to be the casualties of some of the problems within our education system and this trend needs to end. Liberal analysts anticipate writing distorted reports and articles about the numeracy and illiteracy shortcomings of our people without taking into consideration the infrastructural deficits which still see students in disadvantaged communities being marginalised within the education system.
The YCLSA calls upon all progressive formations to take the lead in assisting, matriculants and supporting COSAS’s initiative in towards preparing for their final exams.
