*NUMSA CONDEMNS CLAIMS OF SETTLEMENT OFFER REACHED WITH RMI & FRA!* *13 September 2010*
The *National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa* (Numsa) condemns the reprehensible tactics applied by Retailers Motor Industry and Fuel Retailers Association by insinuating that they have reached a settlement with the union and the strike has been called off. These actions by the motor ruling oligarchy are a declaration of war against the super-exploited and hungry workers. We strongly believe that these actions are not neutral, but a class position by the motor ruling oligarchy using the repressive apparatus, the media, which it owns and controls to disseminate its dominant ideas – by falsely lying that they have reached an agreement with the union and workers, should go back to work. This falsehood or imaginary settlement through the organs of class rule, the media, is a cheap shot at Josef Goebbels propaganda in Nazi Germany. This we condemn with the contempt it deserves! It is our contention that the motor industry golden boys of global Capitalism have no authority or mandate to speak on behalf of the collective leadership of workers as led by Numsa. The workers in the motor industry know their leaders and they are expecting the leadership to report back on the mandate that was solicited through a transparent and democratic process at the shop-floor. We want to publicly reject the claims by the employers that they have reached an agreement with the union on behalf of our members. But instead we are exploring avenues and different scenarios to find a lasting settlement that is in line with our calls for equal distribution of income at the point of production and the decent wage agenda as advanced by President Jacob Zuma’s administration. Our members should not be fooled or misled by employers that we have reached a deal. There should be a clear distinction between bedroom deals and boardroom deals. We call on our members not to be defocused and confused by the employers, but to fight until their demands of a double-digit wage increase, scrapping of labour brokers, and reduction of working hours from 48hrs to 40hrs per week is achieved. As Numsa, we will call our ally, the Chemical, Energy, Print, Wood and Allied Workers Union (CEPPAWU) to join our strike action as part of rendering the industry unproductive.
