Maybe the comrade misquoted -- or otherwise there are some very strange translations of Marx going around. I don't think that 'environment' is TOO far away from 'social existence' but it is certainly not identical. Also for thise of you who love the original language of Marx; in the "Critique of the Gotha Programme" (1875). Marx says,
"a communist society, not as it has developed on its own foundations, but, on the contrary, just as it emerges from capitalist society; which is thus in every respect, economically, morally, and intellectually, still stamped with the birthmarks of the old society from whose womb it emerges." with the greatest respect to the founder of communism, I would say that similarly Marx's writing bears the birthmarks of turgid German Philosophy from whose womb he emerged.
