The quotation is from the Preface to "A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy" Karl Marx 1859. I have attached the whole paragraph and put the quotation iin bold. What Marx is saying is that the society in which we live shapes our consciousness and how we see the world. To expand -- in South Africa, whether we hate capitalism or we love it, whether we hate the ANC or we love it -- the very dialogue, including the discussion we are having here, is determined essentially by the society in which we live. By understanding how society changes and how PRACTICALLY it is possible to change it, that very consciousness becomes part of the process of change.
