*ANC Media Release, 18 January 2010* *New ANC appointments in parliament*The African National Congress in Parliament today, 18 January, held its first special caucus meeting of the year to reflect on the programme of parliament for the next few weeks and receive report on new parliamentary appointments.
The meeting once again congratulated the new chairpersons of portfolio committees, whose names were announced in the last caucus held at the end of last year. Appreciation was also extended to the number of whips who acted in the vacant positions of chairpersons, following the appointment of the previous incumbents to the executive. This ensured that the programmes of parliament continued without any disruption.
All the chairpersons of parliament have today began with a four-day workshop, which will induct them on their constitutional roles and responsibilities, including tools and techniques for oversight & accountability.
The 35 whips in parliament, some of whom were appointed today to fill the vacancies left by whips who were appointed to chairperson positions, will undergo a two-day workshop tomorrow and Thursday. The appointments of new whips and committee chairpersons today means that we are beginning this year with a full compliment of leaders in this institution.
The newly appointments are as follows: New Chairpersons and Cluster Convenors:1.Veteran MP BEN TUROK will chair the Joint Committee on Ethics and Members' Interest. The position was not filled when new chairpersons were announced last year. Turok also chairs Caucus's Political Education Committee.
2.BEAUTY NOMHLE DAMBUZA was appointed convenor of the Social Transformation Cluster. She also chairs Human Settlement portfolio committee.
3.LYDIA SINDISIWE CHIKUNGA was appointed convenor of Peace & Security Cluster. She is also chairing Police portfolio committee.
