ANCYL Centurion Central calls for the establishment of the Mpumalanga Multimedia University (MMU)
*Background* * * Developmental States across the world have always relied on education as one of their key pillars for development. South Africa has identified the Developmental State trajectory as one it strives to traverse in order to fulfill its responsibilities to its citizenry. South Africa has therefore prioritized education and skills development. South Africa is divided into nine provinces of which seven of them have at least one University. Mpumalanga and the Northern Cape provinces do not have a University. As a global citizen, South Africa is also dictated to by globalization. Globalization at this point calls for technologically advanced countries for theirs and global development. In this regard, South Africa needs a strategic centre of technological and multi-media excellence. The ANCYL Centurion Central Branch calls for the establishment of the Mpumalanga Multimedia University. Our call does not only support the need for a University in Mpumalanga (as supported by the Minister of Higher Education and Training) but also supports the Developmental State path that South Africa wants to traverse. This University will be the first of its kind in the continent. In the view of the ANCYL Centurion Central, a consolidation of all state entities which are training in the field of multimedia from various national departments (such as those within the Ministry of Communications, namely ISSA; Nemisa, Meraka e- skills from DST, etc) may lead to the first batch of MMU students registering in 2012. With the consolidation of such SOEs and their current training profiles, the branch’s foresight predicts that by the year 2015 there could be a fully fledged Multimedia University in Mpumalanga. *Rationale* South Africans and the whole world will come to MMU to pursue their educational goals, and they will be sharing one thing in common – a passion for creative careers in the entertainment and media industry. MMU’S mission will be to provide students with an innovative style of education, delivered by a staff of dedicated individuals that addresses the career opportunities available in an ever-growing, constantly evolving industry. This will be done by developing unique curricula that combine elements of creativity, art, innovation, business and life skills, technical prowess, and academic achievement. MMU’s education will be delivered via immersive teaching methods (that will be industry regulated), both in real world production studios and classrooms. Every one of MMU’s diploma and degree program will be designed to provide students with knowledge and real world experience that will help them realize their career goals in Multimedia Engineering, Science & Technology, the Entertainment and the ICT industry as a whole. Mpumalanga Multimedia University (MMU) will be marking South Africa’s foray into the new economy. In this new economy, knowledge, communication & technology, engineering and intangibles become as important, parallel to the traditional manufacturing processes and physical assets of the old economy. This briefing note marks the first policy proposition from the ANCYL Centurion Central towards the National Congress in June. -- You are subscribed. This footer can help you.
