*TELKOM IS A PEOPLE’S ENTIRY, NOT A POLITICAL APPENDAGE FOR PATRONAGE AND
SPLURGE.*

The Communications Workers Union (CWU) is worried and concerned at the
continued elitist approach by the government in the recent appointment of
the Telkom CEO and the Chairperson of the Telkom Board. We are worried that
government continues to ignore the federation and its affiliates in taking
decisions that affect the wellbeing of workers and the citizens.

It should remain an important lesson that the appointment of leaders in key
state parastatals without due consultations with the stakeholders involved
will always create a paralysis in the much expected progress that must be
made by these entities. A classical example is the case of the SABC, the
lesser talked about the better.

We however acknowledge the skills and experience that the newly appointed
CEO possesses and we anticipate a turn-around of the entity’s performance.
Her strong ICT background, experience, managerial and leadership capacity
give us confidence that she will stabilize the organization and uproot the
current perceived cancer that is devouring the entity in the form of
corruption, nepotism, fraud, etc. We further urge her to deal with the
current dossiers that are gathering dust on the desks of the company.

We also note that the currently launched *8.ta* has not been doing well at
all except helping to plunder the tax payer’s money in the form of
exorbitant advertising and branding antics in all media channels. We
encourage the CEO to take a bold step in order to deal with that hopeless
project doomed for fail. It is her prerogative to act in the interests of
the shareholder (who in this case are the citizens through government) to
save Telkom from further going down the drain. This will further save
destitute workers who are slaughtered by retrenchments and the politically
insensitive, head in the sand Voluntarily Severance Packages.

As CWU we are also aware that the currently splurging *8.ta* is rather
sustaining the political interests of certain individuals who are currently
involved in factional tendencies within the ANC, the alliance in general and
the ANCYL in particular. These individuals are hell bent to destroy the
historical values of our congress democratic movement of selflessness and
personal ambition sacrifices by introducing tactics such as
“tenderpreneurship” for a quick buck in order to pledge patronage to the
poverty stricken young activists in our structures for factional battles in
the leadership of our movement.
