*YCLSA welcomes the launch of Youth Corps, together let fight the scourge of unemployment*
06 May 2011 The Young Communist League of South Africa [Ufasimba] welcomes the launch of the National Rural Youth Service Corps. We view the launch as a bold step towards combating youth unemployment in our country. The majority of unskilled labour is found on the countryside and largely affect young people. The majority of young people in rural area live in immense poverty; they do not have access to health care services, decent education, clean running water and necessary amenities. It was within this background that the Young Communist League of South Africa hosted a “Youth for Jobs” summit in 2010 attended by 250 delegates representing 84 youth organisations which raised the awareness of youth unemployment. We are happy that Youth employment is now in the centre of government agenda. The launch of the National Rural Youth Service Corps by the Head of Sate, President Jacob Zuma, comes at a time when our country has just witnessed a 25% hike of unemployment with more than 50% of young people affected by this scourge of unemployment. It is on record that about 1.9 million of young people are unemployed making us to be amongst the leading countries in this regard. While we support this initiative by government we remain convinced that as long as government departments do not align their programs with the decent job-creation-orientated pillars of the ANC-led Alliance 2009 election manifesto, the scourge of unemployment will continue to haunt the poor of our country. As long as our government departments and their functionaries continue to intensively rely on unscrupulous and fruitless tender sprees that benefit only the elite, the scourge of unemployment will continue to haunt innocent South Africans. At the heart of our motive in supporting the launch of these National Rural Youth Service Corps is our reason in believing that the working class and the poor of our country should be their own liberators. They must, in word and action, refuse to continue hanging on the rope of those who feed on human labour, those idlers who rely on government tenders for selfish accumulation at the expense of tax-payers money which they work very hard to obtain. Again, while we commend and support this milestone we remain highly convinced that the scourge of unemployment will never be eliminated within a capitalist economy like ours. We need not to be convinced otherwise that as long as finance and real capital continues to be in the hands and control of the white minority, ‘the unelected few’ whose riches were accumulated out of racial extermination and exploitation of the working class (Africans in particular, blacks in general), the scourge of unemployment will continue to haunt us. To us, the past is our best teacher. To us, the revolution remains our best teacher. And to us, the National Democratic Revolution serves no purpose unless it serves that of the working class.
