Revolutionary greetings In support of the CWU media statement, find below the historical timeline- of local govt elections and the day of birth of Elder Walter Sisulu. Uhuru 18 May 1912 Walter Sisulu, influential anti–Apartheid activist and co–founder of the African National Congress Youth League and Umkhonto weSizwe, was born “As international attention has rightly been focused on Nelson Mandela as the symbol of South African resistance, other eminent leaders of the freedom movement languishing in apartheid prisons are little known around the world. Among them the most deserving of respect is Walter Ulyate Max Sisulu, a mentor of Nelson Mandela in his youth, the Secretary-General of the African National Congress from 1949 to 1954 and the organizational genius of ANC. He was the moving spirit behind all the great campaigns in the 1950's, as well as the transformation of the ANC in 1960-61 for underground work and armed struggle” - ES Reddy 1987 Political leader, Walter Ulyate Max Sisulu was born in the Engcobo area in the Transkei on 18 May 1912. Sisulu worked as a miner, baker's assistant, domestic helper and factory hand and was an active trade unionist before joining the African National Congress (ANC) in 1940, immediately demonstrating a talent for leadership and organisation. Determined that the movement should become more militant, he was instrumental, along with Oliver Tambo and Nelson Mandela, in forming the ANC Youth League (1944). He was elected its treasurer, and thereafter rose rapidly in the ranks of the parent body, serving as secretary-general from 1949 to 1954. Sisulu was a key figure in events leading up to the ANC's acceptance of the Youth league's program of action in 1949. He was one of the key figures in the 1952 Defiance Campaign; was banned in terms of the Suppression of Communism Act; visited communist Eastern bloc countries, Israel, China and Britain; and then moderated his views somewhat to support the non-racial Congress Alliance. At the end of the decade he helped form Umkhonto we Sizwe (1960), the ANC’s military wing. He was charged with but acquitted of treason in1961 but was charged again in the Rivonia Trial in October 1963. On 12 June 1964 he was sentenced to life imprisonment for planning acts of sabotage. The following day Sisulu, Mandela and other convicted Rivonia trialists were sent to Robben Island. In October 1989 the South African government released Sisulu. In July 1991 Sisulu was elected ANC Deputy-President. Walter Sisulu retired on the eve of South Africa's first multi-racial elections in 1994. He died at his home in Orlando on 5 May 2003; he is survived by 5 children and his wife Albertina Sisulu. Albertina Sisulu is celebrating her 90th birthday in August this year (2008).

To: [email protected] Date: Tuesday, May 17, 2011, 1:06 PM CWU CERTAIN WITH ANC VICTORY!!!!! 17 May 2011 The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has noted with keen interest campaigns of all political parties for local government elections for 18 May 2011. The leadership of CWU has been visiting all nine provinces in all corners of the country communicating with its members to vote correctly, and voting correctly is voting African National Congress (ANC). We are encouraging our members and their families to take solace from the track-record of the ANC in the past 17 years of our democracy in delivering services to the overwhelming majority of the working people. These ranges from progressive labour laws and labour market policies to delivery of millions of houses, water, sanitation and the whole range of other municipal services to the African Majority in particular; and black people in general who have been at the receiving end of apartheid and colonialism of a special type. We are certain and clear that the daughters and sons of apartheid architects (the Hellen Zilles, the Steve Hofmeyers and those spoilt brats under the Afriforum Family) will never see the light of the day in these local government elections. Their dream was shattered by the masses of our people in 1994 when ANC was voted in to power under the leadership of Nelson Rolihahla Mandela. They must be reminded that the ANC liberated them as well as interacting with black people has become a privilege in a democratic society. As CWU, we would like to urge all our members and workers in general to go and exercise their democratic right to vote for ANC. We urge all South Africans not to disappoint Walter Sisulu as the day 18 May is the birthday of this gallant and brave leader of the ANC who compromised his comfort to fight the apartheid regime to archive the fruit of freedom that we are relishing today. Voting ANC is to acknowledge the role that Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Winnie Mandela, Chris Hani, Solomon Mahlangu, Mzala Nxumalo and many heroes and heroines played to outcast the evil apartheid regime.
