The YCLSA support COSATU on the Walmart

1 June 2011

The Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] is extremely
concerned by the Competition Tribunal's approval of the take-over of a
controlling 51% of Massmart by the Walmart a notorious American
multinational company.

As an organisation we have campaigned vigorously against Youth
unemployment, but now our Jobs for Youth campaign is threatened by
this move. Waltmart is known on subverting workers Rights. It is the
very company that has denied workers Rights to belong to trade union.
Walmart is also known of destroying local manufacturing business by
using its competitive advantage to force its competitors out of
business. This will lead to massive unemployment and will see many
young people on local manufacturing industry unemployed.

There are only two conditions from Competition Tribunal which may be
interpreted as progressive for the workers: the reinstatement of 503
workers retrenched by Massmart, and the enforcement of all
agreements negotiated by the trade unions in Massmart, but even this
is restricted to only three years.

As the Young Communist League of South Africa we will fully support
COSATU on its effort to stop this Capitalist monster on destroy our
economy. We call all our members and Mass Democratic Movement to do
everything within legal means to stop Walmart
