Cde Godfrey As a former shopsteward of COSATU affiliated union Nehawu, I know all you have just elaborated on is unfortunate & disturbing reality. The so called independent unions enjoy unwarraned leverage in public service, to an extend that the employer can even recruit for them. Foremost we are disappointed & dislodged by our deployed Cdes, when I arrived in the Master of the High Court North Gauteng it was only PSA, you were even send to PSA shopsteward upon appointment. Because I was coming from a revolutionary bachround, I asked myself a question where are revolutionary unions in this office. I called COSATU offices, then I was referred to NEHAWU. I mobilised 70 members & we were launched.
That was the beggining of struggle but also of nightmare to me & my fellow Shopstewards, they resighed one by one. the enemy was big crushing every one said to be a leader of revolutionary union. The only time I managed to keep my collective intact, it was when i made them to be scholars of Maxism-Leninism . We were persecuted & margilised when it comes to promotions. We were failed by our ANC cdes even by own union. I was denied an opportyunity to be promoted to position of Director, necessarily I had tobe stopped not to make to that level, because I am likely to bring unionism with me at that level. My matter was simple because I was shortlisted by the panel I was even informed by e-mail, but my enemenies realised that & abused power & removed from the list. Before I was removed, because I was acting on that position for 1 & half years, I was advised to choose to be leader of the workers or to join management. However it could not come as choice to me because leading workers & the poor is a holy call for me. So I said if that was a condition I am not joining them, that caused me a promotion. I raised the matter with the council, it was set down, however after having finished our pleadings the Arbitrator was changed & the ruling was not in our favour surprisingly so. I wanted the matter to go to Labour Court, I did not personally have the money then I approahed my union to assist, sadly they could not. I did myself but I could not keep up with legal fees as the employer was dragging the matter with postponements. I had to give up. This is one of those cases, not even the worst case. Our submissions as branch assisted by national office of NEHAWU still sitting with the Ministres of the ANC, starting from Mabandla to Radebe. After this My life was a living hell, I decided to market another job fortunately I succeded. That is it in a nutshell, you are not alone, our cdes are suffering out there because the ANC does not deploy revolutionaries but cheap politicians. So cde the solution is for you to get help from structures of the alliance in Nothern Cape, of course through your union regional or provincial offices. Perhaps Cde VC can help with contacts, above all continue to bulid that branch amid the onslaught. It is time that we heed call made by NUMSA that as shopstewards & workers we should swell the ranks of the SACP & ANC, in a bid to stop the already underway process of liquidating the ANC. Workers have numbers & indeed the benefit & leverage of receiving the best tevolutionary education through teachings of marxism-leninism. Aluta Continua!
