Date 30 JUNE 2011

ANC GAUTENG PROVINCE - PRESS RELEASE - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THE ANC GAUTENG CALLS FOR ARREST OF DUBE HOSTEL VANDALS .

The ANC Gauteng calls for the South African Police Service (SAPS) to move
with great speed to apprehend the vandals and arsonists that burned the
newly constructed RDP flats in Dube - Soweto. The incident of vandalism was
triggered by the protesting Dube Hostel residents. The ANC condemns the
torching of flats as there is no justification to destroy property which was
built for the poor.

The vandals and arsonists should be arrested as a matter of urgency. No
matter how angry the protestors are, they do not have the license to take
the law into their own hands. The torching of flats is not only wrong but
undermines our determined efforts to work to improve the lives of ordinary
people. Now, poor families will have to wait because their homes have been
destroyed by criminal elements.

The burning is purely motivated by criminal inclination. Any violent conduct
and burning of flats to highlight grievances is inexcusable, it can only
fuel anarchy and disorder. The infringement of the rights of others and
burning of the flats cannot be used as a tool for dissatisfaction and the
creation of chaos. The ANC believes that genuine and legitimate concerns of
communities should be addressed. People have the right to protest. The
protest should not be detrimental to rights of other citizens. We call upon
ANC structures and communities to protect community and state assets in
working with the police.
