Response to SOWETAN Editorial on “Apathetic Cops”
POPCRU has noted the unfortunate frustrations as experienced by the family of
David Lubisi due to his alleged disappearance in Lepelle River, Limpopo. We
content that SOWETAN is correct by saying “Police’s failure to communicate
progress or lack of it to the family is inexcusable”.
Whilst we maintain that the Police with their capacity on divers and other
related resources to search for the body of the victim, it has always been a
concern for us on the sloppy response by South African Police Services
Management to communicate effectively, with a superlative degree of sensitivity
on the matter. It was unlettered to have witnessed on national television
commuters literally having sticks and stones in the river, searching for the
body out of frustrations.
We share rightly with SOWETAN Editorial dated 30th June 2011 on ploughing of
suspicions on his disappearance, with unintended consequences of eroding the
confidence in the police service in that area.
Perhaps, the SAPS Management should have explored the opportunities to organize
counselling for the affected family, to soothe their worries than resort to a
blaming game which does not embrace the values of SAPS, and the nature of the
serve in serving and protecting the citizens.
We adjure all parties to engage on this impasse to explore all opportunities,
to
finally locate the body and/or utilize modern technology to resolve the
frustration about the disappearance.
