Subject: [YCLSA Discussion] Minister of Police adjures South Africans to work
for peace
Media Statement
08th July 2011
Minister of Police adjures South Africans to work for peace
The Ministry of Police has convened a Summit on Police Killing today at
Birchwood, Boksburg, as part of a government commitment to accelerate
implementation of five priorities, amongst others; to fight against crime and
corruption.
20% of the incidences occurred when the Police were responding to emergency
calls and the will of the South African citizens must be to make concerted
efforts to liquidate crime in all communities. And in 80% cases, firearms are
used for such murders.
Almost 48 police officers were killed in the line of duty only for the first
two
quarters of 2011.And for 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 Financial Year almost 105 and
101 Police Officers were killed respectively. The impact are devastating as it
undermines the Constitutional imperatives and democracy, bringing low levels of
confidence, uncertainity and narrow agenda to isolate Police Officers in
communities by thugs.
The Summit comprises of various stakeholders, inclusive of Labour, Faith-Based
Organizations, Business and Civil Society to participate in commission
deliberations on various topics;
· Preventative Actions that can be addressed by SAPS,
· Responses of the Criminal Justice System to attacks on Police,
· The Role of Civil Society in Preventing attacks on Police Officers,
· Raising Public Awareness around police killings, and
· Dealing with the Victims of Police Attacks [family]
We look forward to come out with tangible responses to combat erosion of lives
of our many brothers and sisters serving the country in their blue uniform and
other law enforcement agencies.
POPCRU argues that Community Policy Strategy must be finalized, to include
making it mandatory for all Policing Areas to account of the functionality of
Community Policing [Safety] Forums as revolutionary vehicle to inculcate
civilian oversight of police work.
