AUGUST*

*16 August 2011*

The ANC Caucus of the Gauteng Legislature convened a successful Caucus for
the month of August. The Caucus sat as South Africans celebrate women’s
month. The ANC Caucus deliberated on a number of issues pertaining to
development and progress of Gauteng in all aspects of society and more over
preparing to embark on women’s month programme and tabling of the Midterm
review report. The ANC Caucus welcomes the official launching by the
President of the ANC, the much anticipated 100 year celebrations of the
oldest revolutionary movement on the African continent.

*The caucus of the ANC in the GPL deliberated on the following matters:*
**- **The persisting Acid Mine Drainage remains a critical issue
affecting thousands of lives within our communities. The ANC Caucus through
the Legislature remains committed towards ensuring that this matter is
addressed. As an activist caucus our role is to ensure that pragmatic
solutions are implemented and that ongoing consultation with communities
continues. AMD can’t be resolved by one isolated department, it requires
collective focus by various departments affected including the Department of
Human Settlements. We welcome the commitment of all stakeholders and the
priority it has been awarded****
** **
**- **Women’s month has already begun and the ANC Caucus placed
great emphasis that women’s month can’t be the only month utilised to
celebrate the successes and gains of women in their struggle for
emancipation. The ANC Caucus has tabled programmes which should be
sustainable over and above the month of August. Issues which have been
prioritised are the ongoing corrective rapes which are clear signals that
barbarism still exists in some sections of society as well as violence
against children. The law must be exercised harshly to those who continue to
ridicule and exploit women in this day in age, 17 years into our democracy.
****

**- **The ANC caucus applauds the Women’s League for prioritising
organisational building, by prioritising strengthening of their branches.
The ANC has a goal to reach of having one million members by 2012. The ANCWL
has asserted its commitment in ensuring that we reach this number. Women
constitute a significant number in the ANC and have asserted their role as
independent and revolutionary thinkers who are equal to the task of being
leaders. ****
**- **The ANC Caucus welcomes the much anticipated official launch
of the 100 year celebration programmes by the President of the ANC. The
launch took place at the Constitutional hill; this symbolises the road South
Africans had to endure to build a non sexist, non racist, democratic
dispensation. The 100 year mark for the ANC is a watershed moment not
only in South African history, but the world in its entirety. The ANC is the
oldest revolutionary movement on the continent and it has played a pivotal
role throughout the world in building democracy. We look forward to these
celebrations and will work tirelessly as the ANC Caucus in Gauteng to ensure
that they are a success in the province and throughout the country.****
**- **The ANC Caucus is also preparing for the Midterm review
report. The report will serve as a comprehensive and thorough review on the
state of our provincial government. Millions of South Africans came out in
numbers to vote for the ANC, confirming that the ANC still remains an
organisation in which many South Africans find resonance in. The Midterm
review report will give an analysis of all departments and what we have
achieved thus far as the ANC led government in Gauteng and what challenges
moving forward, still lie ahead.****
****
**- ** The ANC Caucus in the Gauteng Legislature notes and
applauds the Department of Roads and Transport for the successful opening of
the Gautrain route, linking Tshwane and Johannesburg. This historical moment
marks an evolution in transportation in Gauteng. Gautrain’s world class
standards epitomise the direction and vision of government towards building
world class cities in Gauteng. Infrastructure has been highly prioritised in
the past ten years and developments are now taking shape. We also commend
citizens for their patience with the on-going construction work towards this
project. Government continues to assert its commitment towards the
provision of affordable, convenient and accessible transportation for South
Africans. Rea Vaya Bus routes are also almost complete and all the envisaged
projects will soon be synergised in order to ensure effective transport
services in and around Gauteng. ****
*We wish all South African women a wonderful women’s month*
