The Communication Workers Union (CWU) Gauteng we welcome the reports that
indicates that the South African Post Office (SAPO) intend to probe top
executive. We view this as a step towards the right direction taken by the
SAPO in dealing with corruption in the organisation. However we’re taken
aback by the fact that there seem to be a cover up by the SAPO’s board to
defend some within the organisation.

It cannot be acceptable that after sixteen (16) months of investigation the
board’s chairperson Ms. Vuyo Mahlati said that the suspected involvement of
Chief Executive Officer Motswanesi Lefoka and Chief Operating Officer John
Wentzel came to light after they were questioned by journalist at the press
conference concerning the expenditure.

We had on numerous occasions raised this matter with them, including but not
limited to our memorandum that was handed over to SAPO during our march in
2009 December protesting against the usage of labour brokers. Furthermore;
the stalling of the courier speed services integration process from Courier
Fright Group (CFG) into SAPO.

The CFG which is been used as a milking cow to benefit few corrupt
individuals through outsourcing of key functionalities in the organisation.
Our believe is that besides the issue of Eco Park offices that has resulted
in irregular expenditure of R425m and extravagant expenditure of R19m that
was in breach of Public Management Fund Act, SAPO executive management is
rotten to the core with corruption.

As a result workers are the ones who’re at the receiving end, and this is
evident through poor quality and sustainable jobs that they’re exposed to in
general, lewd salary increases, outsourcing (CFG) and the utilisation of
labour brokers.

We therefore demand that CEO and the COO to be immediately suspended pending
investigation with an intention to initiate disciplinary hearings. Failure
to accede to our demands, as CWU Gauteng we will be left with no other
option but to mobilise our members in SAPO to the streets against corruption
in general and in to defence their jobs that are in serious threats, because
of crass material acquiring few individuals.
