![]() ‘Aim at Malema and you strike us all’ The ANC Youth League will push for disciplinary action against its whole executive committee, to prevent its president, Julius Malema, from being singled out should the ANC decide to act against it, according to a league national executive committee (NEC) member. Speaking on condition of anonymity, the member said yesterday that the committee was united behind Malema. The ANC “won’t take disciplinary action. They’ll probably have internal political discussions, but it won’t get to dismissals, suspensions…” “There’s not enough authority within the ANC.” But an ANC NEC member said party officials were more united on the need to deal with Malema. If it was argued that the league’s executive was responsible, people were prepared to push for the entire leadership to be suspended. Even people who had previously been vocal in their support for Malema felt he had crossed the line, the NEC member said. There was a sense that previous chances to rein in the league under Malema had been missed: the first occasion was his appearance before the disciplinary committee, where it was felt the charges had not been formulated properly, allowing Malema to get off with a relatively light punishment; the second was at the ANC’s national general council in Durban last September, when Malema and members of his executive stormed the stage as mine nationalisation was being considered. Yesterday, the ANC’s top six officials met to discuss the youth league’s statement that it would send a command team to Botswana to unite opposition forces against the “puppet regime” there, and the league’s subsequent apology and retraction on Saturday. - Political Bureau -- You are subscribed.
