Public sector unions, government reach wage deal

 The Times, 16 August 2011

Public sector unions and government have reached a wage deal, which concluded
the first phase of negotiating process for 2011, the Independent Labour Caucus
said on Tuesday.

ILC chairperson Chris Klopper said state employees would receive 6.8% salary
adjustment, payable retrospectively with effect from May 1 2011.

"The projected consumer price inflation for 2011 is 4.8% - 5%, and thus the
6.8% adjustment ensures a real increase of 1.8% - 2%. If read in conjunction
with the annual salary progression that state employees qualify for, the
adjustment is justifiable," the trade union federation said.

Klopper said the agreement provided a base to enable it to engage the employer
during a next phase of negotiations on matters such as new housing benefits and
the equalisation of medical subsidy. The talks will begin on August 22.
