*CWU IS WORRIED BY THE DISHONESTY OF THE SABC*

*18 AUGUST 2011*

The Communication Workers Union [CWU] has noted the request of R7billion to
bail out its financial crisis and also intention to cut jobs. CWU would like
to retaliate its position that it will never allow SABC to retrench workers
in a form of “reducing headcounts”. SABC met with CWU at its National
Executive Committee workshop two months ago and assured us that there will
be no retrenchments. We are surprised now that the broadcaster wants to use
their failure and turnaround strategy to turnaround against workers. If
indeed SABC wants to cut costs by reducing headcounts [retrenchments], CWU
will be left with no option, but to shut down the broadcaster.

CWU is very concerned by some board members who want to use the public
broadcaster (SABC) to run their factional political battles for their narrow
chauvinistic interests. There are some board members who monopolise the
public broadcaster and abuse their office to promote their own profiles
while the SABC is not recovering. Indeed the broadcaster is in ICU. These
individuals are hell bent on destroying the historical values of our
congress movement, selflessness and sacrifice by introducing values such as
“tenderpreneurship” for a quick buck in order to pledge patronage within our
structures for factional battles in the leadership of our movement. Very
soon not later than tomorrow CWU will name and shame these individuals
within the SABC board.

CWU is worried by the continued elitist approach by the government and the
SABC board in the recent appointment of the SABC acting GCEO, Phil Molefe,
who continues to ensure that there is a news blackout when it comes to
screening or televising activities of CWU. Government and the SABC continue
to ignore the federation and its affiliates in taking decisions that affect
the wellbeing of workers and the citizens. It should remain an important
lesson that the appointment of leaders in key state parastatal without due
consultation with the key stakeholders involved will always create a
paralysis in the much expected progress that must be made by these entities.
As CWU, we demand that the SABC should appoint a full-time GCEO as soon as
possible.
